Mindfulness has become a bit of a buzz word, however it is increasingly recognised as an effective method for increasing self-awareness, reducing stress and effectively managing thoughts and feelings that are damaging to us.

Learning mindfulness is not complicated, however it is often misunderstood.  It is fair to say that many of us spend much of our lives focused on either the past or the future and paying only the minimum attention to what is actually happening in the present.

Mindfulness is a method that we can practice and 'train' ourselves in.  Put simply, it is about living in the present moment and consciously paying attention to all aspects – not just what we see when we are undertaking a particular activity, but 'tuning in' to what we hear, taste, smell, feel and think.  This allows us to fully experience what we are doing, or to simply 'be', something that many of us have forgotten how to do.

Practicing mindfulness can help us to:

– increase our connection with our entire selves
– increase our connection with others, and to the world around us
– understand what really motivates us
– become aware of what we are avoiding
– develop our self-acceptance and compassion
– feel more calm and peaceful

Importantly, learning mindfulness allows us to truly recognise the distinction between ourselves and our thoughts, helping us to achieve an increased state of balance and decrease any emotional volatility.
